Description:
The Junior Piping Drafter is responsible for preparing and revising piping drawings that support refinery capital projects, maintenance, and turnaround activities. Working under the guidance of senior designers and piping engineers, this role develops AutoCAD drawings, updates existing plant documentation, and assists with piping design deliverables to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient project execution.
This position is ideal for an entry-level drafting professional seeking to build a career in refinery piping design and engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and revise piping drawings using AutoCAD.
- Update Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), piping plans, isometrics, equipment layouts, plot plans, and piping details.
- Assist piping designers and engineers with drafting deliverables for capital, maintenance, and turnaround projects.
- Incorporate field markups (“redlines”) into existing engineering drawings.
- Participate in field walk-downs to verify existing piping configurations and gather information for drawing updates.
- Develop and maintain piping support details, tie-in drawings, and equipment arrangement drawings.
- Coordinate with Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical, and Instrumentation disciplines to ensure design accuracy.
- Maintain drawing revisions in accordance with refinery document control standards.
- Organize and maintain electronic drawing files and project documentation.
- Ensure drafting work complies with refinery engineering standards, client specifications, and applicable industry codes.
- Associate degree or technical certificate in Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
- 0–3 years of drafting experience in an industrial, manufacturing, petrochemical, or refinery environment.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and piping layouts.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience working in a refinery, chemical plant, petrochemical facility, or other heavy industrial environment.
- Basic understanding of refinery piping systems and equipment.
- Familiarity with piping components, valves, fittings, and pipe specifications.
- Experience updating as-built drawings from field redlines.
- Exposure to AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx, SmartPlant 3D (SP3D), or MicroStation is a plus.
- Knowledge of ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code is preferred.
- TWIC Card or the ability to obtain one.
- Basic understanding of refinery piping systems and industrial drafting practices.
- Ability to learn refinery engineering standards and document control procedures.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate engineering drawings.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments.
- Willingness to learn from senior piping designers and engineers.
- Office-based with periodic field visits to operating refinery units.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing field walk-downs.
- Ability to climb stairs, walk long distances throughout industrial facilities, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
