Job Description

I&C Project Engineer

Location: Corpus Christi, TX

Description

Role Purpose
  • Provide technical authority (SME) for instrumentation, controls, and automation
  • Lead complex design, project execution, and lifecycle integrity for refinery systems

Design & Project Leadership (Primary Focus)
  • Lead instrumentation design for major capital projects ($MM–$B scale)
  • Develop and approve:
    • P&IDs, control narratives, C&E, interlock logic
    • Instrument datasheets, loop diagrams, I/O lists
    • SIS/SIL design and safeguarding strategies
  • Perform control valve sizing, instrument selection, and system architecture design
  • Ensure full integration of field instrumentation with DCS / PLC / SIS systems
  • Provide technical oversight from FEL ? detailed design ? construction ? commissioning
*Senior instrumentation engineers are responsible for full lifecycle design, specifications, and documentation for control systems and instrumentation.

Project Experience (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience leading instrumentation scope on:
  • DCS migrations / control system upgrades
  • SIS implementations or lifecycle upgrades (SIL compliance)
  • New unit builds or major revamps (brownfield/greenfield)
  • Tank farm, pipeline, and terminal automation projects
  • Experience coordinating with EPCs, OEMs, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong role in design reviews, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and startup

Core Responsibilities
  • Approve I&C engineering designs, standards, and specifications
  • Lead resolution of complex technical/design issues
  • Drive instrument reliability and design standardization
  • Support PHA / HAZOP / LOPA / SIL and ensure PSM compliance
  • Interface with Operations, Maintenance, and Project teams

Instrumentation Expertise (Required)
  • Flow: Coriolis, Ultrasonic, DP/Orifice
  • Pressure: Smart transmitters, DP systems
  • Level: Radar, Guided Wave, DP, Displacer
  • Temperature: RTDs, Thermocouples
  • Valves: Control valves, actuators, diagnostics
  • Analyzers: GC, O?, sulfur, moisture
  • Safety Systems: SIS, ESD, interlocks
  • Networks: HART, Fieldbus, Modbus
*Instrumentation roles require expertise in measurement and control systems used to monitor and regulate process variables such as flow, pressure, level, and temperature.

Refinery / Petrochemical Experience
  • Experience in units such as Crude/Vacuum, FCC, Hydrotreating, Alkylation, Utilities
  • Strong background in:
    • PSM-covered processes and hazard analysis (PHA/HAZOP/LOPA)
    • Hazardous area classification and design compliance
    • Turnarounds, commissioning, and brownfield modifications

Qualifications
  • 20+ years Instrumentation & Control experience (Refining/Petrochemical)
  • Deep expertise in DCS, SIS, PLC systems and integration
  • Knowledge of ISA, NEC, IEC standards
