Pipe Stress Engineer

Location: Pasadena, TX

Description


We are seeking an experienced Pipe Stress Engineer to support the design, analysis, and execution of refinery and petrochemical facility projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing detailed piping flexibility and stress analyses using CAESAR II, ensuring piping systems comply with applicable industry codes, client specifications, and engineering best practices.

This role requires extensive knowledge of piping design, stress analysis methodologies, support design, and applicable international codes and standards. The Pipe Stress Engineer will collaborate closely with Piping Designers, Structural Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and Project Teams to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective piping systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform piping flexibility and stress analyses using CAESAR II for refinery, petrochemical, and industrial process facilities.
  • Evaluate piping system integrity under various loading conditions, including:
    • Deadweight
    • Internal pressure
    • Thermal expansion and contraction
    • Wind loads
    • Seismic loads
    • Occasional and dynamic loads
  • Analyze nozzle loads on pumps, compressors, vessels, heat exchangers, and other rotating and static equipment.
  • Develop and optimize piping support designs, including spring supports, restraints, guides, anchors, and special supports.
  • Review piping layouts and routing to identify and resolve stress-related issues.
  • Prepare stress analysis reports and engineering calculations for client and regulatory review.
  • Coordinate with structural, mechanical, civil, and piping disciplines to ensure integrated design solutions.
  • Review vendor equipment requirements and ensure compliance with allowable nozzle loading criteria.
  • Support field troubleshooting, construction activities, and commissioning efforts as required.
  • Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, constructability reviews, and project execution meetings.
  • Ensure compliance with company engineering standards, client specifications, and applicable industry regulations.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years of piping stress analysis experience in refinery, petrochemical, chemical processing, or EPC project environments.
  • Proficiency with CAESAR II piping stress analysis software.
  • Strong understanding of piping system design, flexibility analysis, and support engineering.
  • Experience analyzing both aboveground and process piping systems.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, piping specifications, equipment drawings, and isometric drawings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Technical Knowledge
Candidates should possess working knowledge of the following industry codes and standards:
  • ASME B31.1 – Power Piping
  • ASME B31.3 – Process Piping
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC)
  • EN 13480 – Metallic Industrial Piping
  • MSS SP Standards
  • API Standards applicable to refinery and petrochemical facilities
  • International Building Code (IBC)
  • ASCE 7 Wind and Seismic Design Requirements
  • Local and client-specific engineering standards

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with dynamic analysis, vibration studies, and finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Familiarity with AutoPIPE, ROHR2, or other stress analysis software (preferred)e.
  • Experience supporting brownfield and grassroots refinery or petrochemical projects.
  • Knowledge of rotating equipment piping design and API equipment standards.
