Description
The CAD Technician supports natural gas utility engineering and design by preparing high quality construction drawings, system maps, and 3D models using AutoCAD Civil 3D. This role transforms engineer markups, survey data, developer civil files, and right of way information into accurate, buildable designs for both new construction and system modifications. The CAD Technician II collaborates closely with engineers, field personnel, survey teams, and developers to ensure all drawings meet company standards, regulatory requirements, and public ROW design criteria.
Key Responsibilities
- Design; Drafting (AutoCAD Civil 3D)
- Create, update, and manage natural gas utility design drawings including:
- Plan and profiles for gas main and service installations
- Subdivision, mixed use, and commercial utility layouts
- Internal building gas system layouts (as applicable)
- Public right of way gas plans following city/agency standards
- Permit exhibits and construction details
- Convert engineer redlines and markups into complete drawing deliverables.
- Import, clean, and format developer provided civil CAD files to conform to internal styles, layers, and standards.
- Incorporate SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) data, survey points, GIS information, and ROW constraints into design models.
- Generate utility profiles, elevations, and clearance checks for installations in public ROW.
- Apply company CAD standards, styles, templates, and QA/QC policies.
- Import survey, pipe network, and surface data into Civil 3D (DWG, XML, SHP, CSV, etc.).
- Build and maintain surfaces, alignments, pipe networks, and pressure system layers.
- Organize and maintain project files, drawings, and version control across shared data environments.
- Work directly with engineers, project managers, surveyors, and construction teams to clarify design requirements and resolve conflicts.
- Coordinate with developers to receive and interpret civil site files, grading plans, and utility plans.
- Provide feedback on field constructability and identify design issues or conflicts within the ROW.
- Ensure drawings meet:
- Company drafting standards
- Municipal and DOT permitting requirements
- Gas utility regulations and material specifications
- Maintain accurate documentation to support engineering records and regulatory compliance.
Additional Duties
- Assist in maintaining CAD blocks, styles, templates, and standard detail libraries.
- Support plotting, printing, digital submittals, and permitting packages.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Associates Degree, technical diploma, or certificate in CAD, Engineering Technology, Drafting & Design, or similar field.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D with hands on experience in:
- Alignments
- Surfaces
- Profiles
- Pipe networks
- Sheet set management
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans, utility drawings, plats, easements, and survey data.
- Working knowledge of natural gas, water, telecom, or other underground utility design.
- Understanding of basic geometry, measurements, and construction scales.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to maintain accurate records.
Preferred
- Experience drafting for gas utilities or civil engineering firms.
- Familiarity with:
- SUE Quality Levels and survey deliverables
- Public ROW utility standards and permitting processes
- GIS integration and coordinate systems
- Experience supporting land development projects (subdivisions, commercial/mixed use sites).
- Knowledge of materials, components, and construction methods used in natural gas systems.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
- Fine motor skills for detailed drafting work.
- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally (e.g., plan sets, equipment).
- Visual acuity sufficient for screen based design and reviewing printed plans.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
