Job Description

Vehicle Engineering Technician

Location: Sugar Land, Tx

Description:

A Vehicle Engineering Technician (or Automotive Engineering Technician) assists engineers by designing, testing, and troubleshooting vehicle components and systems for performance, durability, and efficiency. They work with prototypes, analyze test data, read blueprints, and maintain specialized testing equipment, often focusing on advancements like fuel efficiency and alternative fuels.

Duties and Essential Job Functions:
  • Testing & Analysis: Performing manual or automated tests on vehicle systems (engines, braking, electric) to evaluate performance and safety.
  • Prototyping: Assembling, repairing, and modifying prototype components.
  • Data Documentation: Recording, analyzing, and reporting on test results using cameras, spreadsheets, and specialized software.
  • Technical Support: Interpreting engineering blueprints, schematics, and work specifications to ensure compliance.
  • Troubleshooting: Identifying the cause of defects or failures in components.
  • Customer Service: Explain technical issues and repair options to customers or service advisors and provide labor and cost estimates.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed logs of all work performed, parts used, and any further service recommendations.
  • Safety & Cleanliness: Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized workspace.
Education and Experience requirements:
Minimum Essential Requirements:
  • Education: Associate degree in automotive engineering technology, heavy equipment technology, or similar mechanical field
  • Experience: Minimum 5-10 years relevant industry experience
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and automotive electrical systems
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in computer-aided design (CAD) software, data acquisition systems, and automotive diagnostics tools
  • Valid Drivers License: Necessary for test-driving vehicles and moving inventory
  • Physical stamina: The role requires the ability to lift heavy objects (often up to 60 lbs), stand for long periods and work in cramped positions
Preferred Skills:
  • Soft skills: Strong communication is essential for explaining technical issues to customers or service advisors
  • Tool familiarity: Proficient in using hand tools, pneumatic tools, and diagnostics scanners
  • Hands-on skills: Experience with mechanics, hydraulics, automotive electronics, and heavy-duty diesel engines
  • Diagnostics skills: Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electronic issues
Work Environment:
  • Technicians usually work in well-ventilated, well-lit repair shops or dealerships, often working full-time, including evenings or weekends. The job is physically demanding and requires working with tools and, at times, in uncomfortable positions.
