Job Description

Piping Designer 

Location: Sinclair, Wyoming

Description:

Performs advanced piping design and drafting assignments in support of refinery operations and capital projects at the company. Works with minimal supervision to develop, review, and implement piping designs in an active brownfield environment, ensuring alignment with site standards and industry codes.

Essential Job duties/responsibilities: 
  • Develops detailed piping layouts, isometrics, and general arrangement drawings for refinery process units (FCC, hydrotreating, utilities, etc.)
  • Executes field walkdowns within operating units to verify existing conditions and support accurate as-built documentation
  • Applies industry codes and standards (ASME B31.3, API, PIP) in all design work
  • Reviews and checks drawings for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with site and corporate standards
  • Coordinates closely with Process, Mechanical, and I&E teams to support multidisciplinary project execution
  • Supports capital projects, MOCs, and turnaround (TA) activities with timely and accurate design deliverables
  • Interfaces with third-party engineering firms and contractors to ensure alignment with refinery standards
  • Maintains and improves CAD standards, drawing systems, and document control processes
  • Provides mentorship and technical guidance to junior designers
  • Special assignments or tasks assigned by supervisor
Experience: 
  • Minimum 5+ years of piping design experience in refinery or petrochemical environments required
  • Experience supporting brownfield projects and operating facilities strongly preferred
Education Level: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent technical experience required
Required Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of refinery piping systems, equipment layouts, and design practices
  • Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, CADWorx, Plant 3D, or similar platforms
  • Ability to interpret and work from P&IDs, plot plans, and equipment drawings
  • Familiarity with refinery-specific codes and standards (ASME B31.3, API, PIP)
  • Experience supporting projects through FEED, detailed design, and construction phases
  • Comfortable performing field work in an operating refinery environment, including unit walkdowns and tie-in planning
  • Strong understanding of constructability and installation practices in brownfield settings
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, operations, and maintenance teams
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Skills: 
  • Experience supporting refinery turnarounds (TA)
  • 3D modeling experience and clash detection (CADWorx Structure, Navisworks, etc.)
  • Prior experience working directly on-site at a refinery
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:
  • May provide technical oversight to junior designers and coordinate with contractors and external engineering firms
Work Conditions:
  • Office and field-based role located at the company in Wyoming. Work will be performed in active refinery environments including exposure to operating process units, outdoor conditions, and industrial hazards
