Job Description

Lead Engineer - Mechanical

Location: St Paul, MN

Job Responsibilities

  • Application of Knowledge of Design:

    • Participates in project strategy meetings, develops design concepts and recommends systems, within discipline, produces pricing and proposal presentation documents and outline specifications.

    • Researches and is responsible for discipline design compliance with proposal/client criteria.

    • Researches, documents and is responsible for discipline design compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, standards and regulations.

    • Awareness of resources to complete due diligence where limited information is provided.

    • Assists Chief Mechanical Engineer in review and selection of discipline specific analysis and modeling software.

  • Design

    • Participates in the development of group and corporate standards and specifications committees.

    • Keeps apprised of new technologies and assists in the incorporation of the new technologies into the A/E practice and discipline design standards.

    • Coordinates work with other disciplines. Performs interdisciplinary coordination checks to minimize deficiencies, errors and omissions in drawings and specifications.

    • Signs and seals design documents when assigned as Professional of Record. Maintains ethics and professionalism.

    • Provides leadership in implementation of corporate quality processes.

    • Complies with state regulations regarding professional registrations.

    • Assures adherence to drawing production strategy and the utilization of the corporate design standards and specifications.

    • Responsible to produce well- organized, finished drawings of good appearance, accuracy, clarity and correctness.

    • Writes discipline specifications for assigned projects.

    • Assures adherence within the group to the discipline quality plan and procedures.

  • Construction Support

    • Takes an active role in quality assurance/quality control/best practices of Mechanical engineering work in the field.

    • Responsible for assuring the design has on construction documents.

    • Advises and assists Construction Project Managers, Superintendents and Subcontractors in the interpretation and clarification of construction documents.

    • Reviews applicable shop drawings and submittal data for compliance with construction documents.

    • Participates as requested in construction inspection to monitor compliance with design intent, construction drawings and specifications. Prepares inspection reports.

    • Provides timely solutions to field problems and prepares field orders, addenda and record drawings.

  • Project Management

    • Assists in developing discipline budgets for projects.

    • Implements corporate initiatives on streamlining systems and procedures.

    • Makes technical presentations to internal and external customers.

    • Manages an engineering design staff on technical matters.

    • Creates discipline work plan for assigned projects. Monitors workload status, advising supervisor of difficulties in accomplishing schedules.

    • Assures adherence to drawing production strategy. Responsible to produce well-organized, finished drawings of good appearance, accuracy, clarity and correctness. 

  • Profitability/Planning/Scheduling

    • Plans production and prepares man-hour estimate and scope of work for project effort for all work in discipline.

    • Directs technical efforts of discipline Interns, Designers and Technicians assigned to the project.

    • Assists in coordinating information with and monitoring efforts/costs of discipline-related outside consultants.

    • Defines goals for engineering staff within PDG or office and advises on staffing levels.

    • Assists in recruiting discipline staff.

    • Assists in defining career paths for PDG or office staff.

    • Assists discipline staff within PDG or office in developing individual goals and approves final goals.

    • Performs yearly evaluations of staff within PDG or office and advises on salary adjustments and promotions.

    • Participates in project staffing assignments.

    • Assists in developing yearly discipline budgets within the PDG.

  • Professional Development

    • Creates technical presentations and articles on mechanical engineering topics suitable for publication and training for both internal and external audiences. May include articles, slide presentations and videos.

    • Participates in the professional community and trade organizations within discipline to promote the company and demonstrate leadership. May include participation in professional or trade association committees, officer positions or publications of articles on Mechanical engineering.

    • Develops training programs and seeks training opportunities for the PDG to help support career paths and enhance technical proficiency in the group.

  • Leadership

    • Monitors professional and trade publications and continuously evaluates new technologies for viability. Advises the Chief Mechanical Engineer on new technologies that the company should be considered for incorporation to the AE practice.

    • Participates in the professional community and trade organizations within discipline.

    • Serves as a champion of sustainable design for projects and knows how to implement into projects.


Education/Experience

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or Architecture from an ABET-accredited program.

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience

  • Licensed Architect or Professional Engineer (P.E.)

Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications Etc.

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Licensed Architect in at least one state with the ability to become registered in all states. LEED Accredited Professional a plus.

  • Creative, innovative and on leading edge of discipline technology and knowledgeable across systems building types.

  • Active participation in professional organizations.

  • Strong leadership and management skills.

  • Ability to read and effectively interpret building construction documentation and associated reports.

  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills to effectively work with others and interact with all levels of management.

  • Excellent organizational skills to handle/prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong negotiation/conflict resolution skills.

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
