Description
The Safety Specialist supports the site’s compliance and continuous improvement efforts by leading procedure analysis, regulatory gap assessments, and alignment with Responsible Care® 14001 and OSHA standards.
This role evaluates existing safety programs and documentation, identifies compliance gaps, and develops corrective action strategies to ensure policies, procedures, and field practices meet regulatory and management system requirements. The Safety Specialist works closely with operations and leadership to strengthen compliance, reduce risk, and improve overall safety performance.
Responsibilities
- Conduct formal gap analyses against RC14001 and applicable OSHA regulations
- Review, evaluate, and revise safety procedures to ensure regulatory alignment
- Assess field execution against documented programs and identify inconsistencies
- Develop corrective action plans and track closure to completion
- Support internal audits and RC14001 management system reviews
- Analyze incident trends and audit findings to identify systemic issues
- Prepare detailed written reports outlining findings and recommendations
- Monitor regulatory updates and ensure timely procedural revisions
- Collaborate with site leadership to implement sustainable compliance improvements
- Maintain organized documentation and compliance records
Knowledge, Skills & Competencies
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations, including 29 CFR 1910
- Demonstrated understanding of Responsible Care® 14001 management systems
- Ability to interpret regulatory language and translate it into executable procedures
- Experience conducting structured compliance audits and gap assessments
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- High attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to influence stakeholders and drive accountability
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and compliance tracking systems
Work Experience, Education, and Certification
- Work Experience: Minimum 5 to 7 years of industrial safety, compliance, or management system experience
- Experience in petrochemical, chemical manufacturing, refining, or heavy industrial environments preferred
- Demonstrated experience with RC14001 implementation or audit support
- Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, or related field preferred
- Equivalent industry experience may be considered in lieu of degree
- Certifications: Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification, or similar credential preferred
- RC14001 auditor training or management system certification preferred
