Description
We are seeking a skilled Structural Fabricator to join our Houston fabrication team. In this role, you will focus on the fabrication and assembly of structural metal components for industrial equipment, including frames, supports, beams, and enclosures. Emphasis will be placed on precise interpretation of blueprints to ensure structural integrity and compliance with industry standards. This position requires hands-on expertise in metal cutting, bending, welding, and assembly, with a commitment to safety and quality in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, physically capable, and eager to contribute to custom projects that support our customers’ operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Read, interpret, and apply detailed blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to fabricate structural components accurately, ensuring dimensions, tolerances, and material selections meet design requirements.
- Perform structural fabrication tasks, including cutting (plasma, oxy-fuel, or saw), bending (press brake), shaping, and forming of steel, aluminum, and other metals for equipment frames, platforms, and support structures.
- Weld structural assemblies using MIG, TIG, or stick processes, focusing on strong, clean welds that withstand heavy industrial loads; perform pre- and post-weld inspections.
- Assemble fabricated parts into final structural units using fixtures, clamps, and fasteners; grind, sand, and finish surfaces for a professional appearance and functionality.
- Measure and layout materials using precision tools (calipers, levels, squares) to verify alignment and structural stability prior to and during assembly.
- Collaborate with engineers, fitters, and production teams to troubleshoot fabrication issues, recommend process improvements, and ensure on-time delivery of components.
- Maintain a clean, organized workspace and adhere to all safety protocols, including PPE usage, lockout/tagout procedures, and OSHA-compliant practices in a shop environment with heavy machinery.
- Conduct quality checks on finished structural pieces, documenting any deviations and performing minor repairs as needed.
- Support inventory management by tracking material usage and reporting shortages for structural steel and welding supplies.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; vocational training or associate degree in welding, fabrication, or related field preferred.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience as a fabricator, with a strong emphasis on structural metalwork (e.g., beams, frames, or load-bearing assemblies).
- Proven proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings, including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols.
- Familiarity with fabrication tools and equipment: plasma cutters, press brakes, grinders, welding machines, and measuring instruments.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly, stand for extended periods, and work in a shop environment with exposure to noise, fumes, and varying temperatures.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in industrial equipment manufacturing, particularly conveying or palletizing systems.
- Knowledge of structural codes and standards (e.g., AISC for steel construction).
- Basic CNC plasma or laser cutting operation.
- Forklift certification or ability to obtain one.
