How to Move from Help Desk to Desktop Support

Many IT professionals look to grow their career by moving from a help desk role into a desktop support position. You might be surprised to learn that it’s usually not the technical-skills side of things that hinders this process — most help desk workers already have the skills to perform the desktop support duties. So what can you do to better your chances of securing that desktop support role that you’ve been vying for?  

Work on Your Soft Skills 

Desktop support is all about your ability to interact with end-users and help them solve their problems. You can’t do that with a bad attitude. So, soft skills like customer service, friendliness, and approachability are just as important as the technical prowess when transitioning into a desktop support role. Critical thinking is another big one; you’ll have to think on your feet in this kind of role, so being able to think through a problem logically and analyze your solutions quickly is a big help.  

Stay Current 

The best desktop support workers are the ones who stay up-to-date on current technologies and trends. You don’t have to know everything about every technology and tool, but you should have a hunger for learning more and be aware of industry trends. And taking the initiative to grow your own knowledge base is a huge attraction to employers — consider earning additional certifications like the Microsoft Certified Professional accreditation or the Comp TIA certification if you don’t have them already. 

Brush Up Your Resume 

Employers and recruiters alike won’t be able to get a good picture of you as the candidate if your resume doesn’t reflect your experience and knowledge. Make sure to brush up your resume and cover letter before starting the transition from the help desk to desktop support. Remember to be specific: describe in detail the duties you’ve performed at your past jobs, including the number of users you support, the number of tickets you resolve, and the relevant technologies and software you are familiar with. The more in-depth you can be, the better!
