Are You Making These Common Interview Blunders?

Interviewing is a delicate art. It’s all about making the right first impression with the hiring manager — one small blunder, and your chances of securing the position can go way down. Take a look at these common interview blunders so you know what to avoid:

Being Late

Rule number one: don’t be late for your interview. That shows that you just don’t care about the job, and it makes a horrible first impression. If you can’t even show up to the interview on time, what reason does the hiring manager have to think you would arrive to work in a timely fashion? Always be early, by at least 10 minutes.

Not Being Assertive

If you’re not assertive and confident in your interview, you’re not very likely to get the job. An interview is all about selling yourself — look the interviewer in the eye, shake hands firmly, and answer his or her questions directly and honestly. A limp handshake and an averted gaze is a quick way to show the employer that you’re not confident in your abilities.

Being Unprepared

Interviewers want their job candidates to show initiative. Part of that is knowing all about the company and the role that the candidate is applying for. Showing up to an interview completely unprepared is a huge red flag! Do your research ahead of time to get an idea of the company’s mission, as well as the culture. That way, you’ll be able to tell the interviewer how you’ll help their cause.

Trash-Talking Your Last Employer

Even if you absolutely reviled your previous position or employer, don’t make it known in your next interview. It serves to do nothing except make you look petty and resentful — who wants to work with someone like that? Don’t trash talk your previous employer. If you had an issue at your last job, explain it honestly without playing the blame-game.

Not Having Questions

Almost every interview ends with the interviewer asking if you have any questions. Few things make a worse impression than simply saying “no.” Prepare a few questions ahead of time — it shows that you’re interested in the position and the company, and it’s an easy way to get a leg up over the competition.
